Affirmative Action Update

Queensland Election Results

9 February 2004

EMILY's List was pleased to congratulate 16 of the EMILY's List endorsed MPs on their return to Parliament following last night's election result.

EMILY's List endorsed 23 candidates during the Queensland election, 17 of whom were sitting members.

EMILY's List was disappointed by the defeat of Christine Scott MP, Member for Charters Towers, who lost her seat by a very small margin.

Co-Convenor Cheryl Davenport also recognized the extraordinary work of non-sitting candidates who ran excellent community based campaigns but were this time unsuccessful.

EMILY's List contributed over $15,000 to the Queensland campaign in Early Money and Directed Donations, as well as mentoring and training. Cheryl Davenport thanked all members of EMILY's List, particularly the Queensland EMILY's List Action Group, for their commitment and contribution to the campaign.

While all but one of the EMILY's List endorsed women Members of Parliament were re-elected, Queensland Labor now has a decreased percentage of women following the resignation at this election of two women MPs, Wendy Edmond (Mt Coot-tha) and Anita Phillips (Thuringowa), who were both replaced by men; and the defeat of Christine Scott and Merri Rose MP in Currrumbin. Queensland Labor now has women as 38 per cent of its Caucus.

Cheryl Davenport and National Treasurer Molly Robson (QLD) congratulated all participants on a great win for Queensland Labor.
