About our Gender Gap Research - Winning the women's vote

Prior to each Federal Election, EMILY's List engages a reputable polling company to conduct face to face focus groups with women in metropolitan and regional marginal seats. The focus groups discuss a number of identified issues affecting women, as well as seek their views and ideas on policy solutions.

Gender Gap Research is more than polling. It is primary research identifying what women want, need and expect from government. It is an essential contribution to good policy and good government.

Our Gender Gap Research is fed directly into the heart of ALP policy making through EMILY's List members who are in Parliament.

Your donation to our Gender Gap Research Fund will streng then our ability to:

  1. Ensure that Labor in government meets the needs and expectations of women;
  2. Assist more progressive Labor women to be elected to Parliament;
  3. Work in coalition with the ACTU, and community and women's groups to achieve and improve:
  • paid maternity leave,
  • affordable and accessible to quality child care,
  • pay equity,
  • abortion law reform and
  • and a society based on human rights.

About Vera Fowler

In the 1940s, along with fellow lawyers Diane Davis and Mary Cameron, Vera Fowler took on the male monopoly of legal affairs. A strong feminist, studying law part time after joining Labor lawyers Slater and Gordon as a typist during World War II, Vera was one of the first women to be admitted to the Bar in Victoria. Vera worked for two separate law firms, each for ten years. She left each firm when less competent men were promoted to partnerships before her. She then took the radical step, for those years, of setting up her own practice as a solicitor and became extremely successful.

Vera championed affirmative action all her life. Her commitment to electing more progressive Labor women to Parliament led her to EMILY's List. Vera delighted in being a Foundation member. Many lives have been enriched by Vera's life, advocacy and friendship. EMILY's List invites you to become a partner in our Vera Fowler Gender Gap Research Fund.

A generous bequest from the Vera enabled us to establish the Vera Fowler Gender Gap Research Fund.

Bequests

Would you like to leave a legacy to your involvement in the Labour Movement, the Labor Party and women's organising?

Many women make a bequest to EMILY's List in their will, ensuring their ongoing contribution to the election of more progressive Labor women to Parliaments.

A bequest can be a powerful statement of your desire to help us build that financial base and provide ongoing support for years to come to Labor women wanting to enter parliament. Women like you, who have and want to make a difference with and for other women. Women who support equity, choice, child care, equal pay and diversity.

For some women it may not be possible to make cash contributions right now, though more than 2000 women are across Australia are doing just that. However, making a bequest to EMILY's List gives women the opportunity to leave a gift to secure the potential future of women and EMILY's List.

You can talk to EMILY's List Australia about leaving a bequest to us that recognises and promotes your long term support of progressive issues and honours you in a way that ensures your values and achievements live on. For more information about leaving a bequest, click here
