Empowering Women and Girls to make our world a better place
The United Nations has a plan to change the world for the better and one of the key parts of this plan is to empower women and girls so that, by 2030, there is gender equality around the world. This plan is built around 17 Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs, with SDG 5 being Gender Equality and Empowering Women and Girls.
There are also goals around Climate Action and No Poverty. Watch this great video about the Sustainable Development Goals And learn more about SDG 5: Gender Equality here
A great way to empower women and young girls is to show them what others have done to achieve great things. Think of Jacinda Ardern, the NZ Prime Minister. These don’t all have to be adults, either. Think of how much impact Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg had on the world before they were even old enough to finish school. Don’t know about Malala and Greta? Or Macinley Butson, a young Australian inventor? Research their lives and impacts and see if you find their stories inspiring.
How to enter:
Step 1: Think of a woman leader, activist, community worker or family member who inspires you to do your bit for our world
Step 2: Create a poster, any size, which includes the girl or woman’s name, her age, her story, and why she inspires you. You can use any medium to do this – draw her picture, paint, collage, or use your computer – whatever way you want to show what she has done or is doing.
Step 3: Photograph or scan your poster and email it, with your name, your school year level and your parent’s/carer’s name, email, and contact phone number to [email protected], subject: Inspiring Women Poster Competition by Friday July 31. Accepted file types: jpg, gif, png, pdf.
Step 4: On the International Day of the Girl on 11 October 2020 we make your poster public (we’ll give you ideas how to do this later).
Inspiring Women Poster Competition Partners
EMILY’s List Australia, Her Place Women’s Museum Australia and the UN Association of Australia have partnered to arrange the Inspiring Women Poster Competition. Each of these organisations is working hard to promote Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls.
EMILY’s List Australia works hard to encourage women and girls to enter politics. One of the major targets of SDG 5 is to bring about a world where all the major decisions made by our governments are made by equal numbers of men and women.
Her Place Women’s Museum Australia seeks to inspire women and girls by honouring the achievements of known and lesser women through exhibitions, public programs, education resources and an archive of what amazing women have done in the past. It is much easier for women and girls to feel empowered to do whatever they want to do if they can see what other women have also done. Visit their website and check out the 40 women or more they have featured to date.
The UN Association of Australia is working with schools, businesses, universities and governments to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals and, particularly, SDG 5: Gender Equality.
