Sorina Grasso for Croydon

Sorina Croydon

I am a teacher, local government Councillor and long term resident of the outer Eastern suburbs, where I have raised a family.

Having taught at the Croydon caSupport Dempus of Swinburne TAFE, as well as working in various teaching and education management roles at Monash University English Language Centre, I know how important a quality education is to provide opportunities for a good life.

As a local government Councillor, I also serve on the Eastern Alliance for Housing Affordability and have been on the Eastern Greenhouse Alliance, working with local councils to find practical solutions to these major challenges, in particular knowing that women over 55 are over represented in homeless statistics.

In addition to holding a Master of Education Degree from Monash, I am a qualified Occupational Health and Safety Professional and am passionate about decent and safe working conditions for everyone. I will fight in Croydon for equal access to good quality education, local jobs, better transport and infrastructure, renewable energy, and a fairer society.

Lorna Dent for Evelyn

Lorna Dent

Lorna Dent, the Labor Candidate for Evelyn, believes her community should be represented by someone who values fairness and equity. Lorna is a community focused local business woman, living in Chirnside Park with her family.

On finishing high school, she didn’t have the opportunity of further study, and began working in a sandwich shop. Lorna has held many roles since then; courier, warehousing and demand analyst roles in large corporations. Lorna and her husband started a business providing IT services in 2011. Last year she completed a Bachelor of Biosecurity Science from Box Hill Institute, returning to school as a mature aged student. This year she has completed a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Assessment and Management from Edith Cowan University, whilst working in the family business. She understands that education changes lives.

Lorna has never been afraid to roll up her sleeves and serve her community. From advocating for NBN infrastructure, seven years as a cub scout leader, and former President of the Lilydale Chamber of Commerce. She believes it is important to stand up and be the representation you want to see - progressive, courageous, and equitable.

Secure jobs – paid fairly, access to health care and lifelong education from preschool through to mature age are important to her area. Lorna is standing for Evelyn, as someone who will listen, advocate and work hard for her community.

Luba Grigorovitch for Kororoit

Luba for Kororoit

Luba Grigorovitch grew up in Melbourne’s West, completing high school at Mount St Joseph Girls College in Altona West before completing a double degree in Business and Arts at Victoria University.

Whilst at university, Luba worked part time in numerous jobs and quickly learnt the importance of Unions and the Labor Party in defending the rights of working people and creating good, well paid and secure jobs.

Luba worked as an Electorate Officer for the late Lynne Kosky, former State Member for Altona. She considered Lynne a valuable mentor who helped shape her. After completing university, Luba was employed with the Victorian Department of Transport and VicTrack, this is where she started her journey with the Rail, Tram & Bus Union Victoria.

In between all of this, the opportunity to assist people and improve our community arose and Luba served close to two terms as a councillor for Hobsons Bay City Council. This experience gave valuable insights and the opportunities to make a difference to people’s lives in our community.

In 2014, Luba became the first woman and youngest ever State Secretary of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, of 8000+ members. In her role as the Victorian Branch Secretary of the RTBU, she advocated to ensure members are respected in the workplace; improve conditions at work; and safety on the job. Looking out and standing up for working people is important and Luba understands firsthand, the need to be valued, respected & safe in your workplace.

Being part of something greater than herself has always inspired Luba to always put in 100%. Kororoit is a vibrant, diverse part of the west and Luba is excited by this opportunity and she is ready to represent constituents’ interests and ensure they continue to have a strong and powerful voice representing them and their families in the next Victorian Labor Government.

Hutch Hussein for Polwarth

Hutch.jpgHutch has had a career and life focused on social justice and community service. As the child of Turkish-Cypriot migrants who came to Australia to forge a better life, she was the first person in her family to attend university. She trained as a social worker and over the past two decades, she has supported and sought to empower young people, those experiencing family violence and people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. Hutch has held senior management roles in leading community organisations, worked as Ministerial Adviser and is currently undertaking advocacy for communities facing disadvantage with a national NGO.

An ALP member for nearly 30 years, she was motivated to join at 18 when then-Premier Jeff Kennett motivated her to care about the society she was living in. At 22, she joined EL and caught the campaign bug when she volunteered with EL candidate Liz Beattie. After having come across brochures of foetuses distributed by Liz’s anti-choice opponent Bernie Finn, she took great joy in seeing Liz defeat Bernie to win Tullamarine in 1999.

Apart from serving as EL’s National Co-Convenor for seven years, when she succeeded her mentor and our inaugural Co-Convenor, Joan Kirner, Hutch has also served as the State President of the Victorian ALP, the first person to do so from a non-Anglo background.

Hutch lives on Victoria’s Surf Coast with her two boys and has been immersed in her local community, serving on her kids’ School Council, convening the local Rainbow Families Group and on the Executive of Dyslexia Support Victoria.

Covering almost 9000 square miles, Hutch has a lot of miles to cover in Polwarth, which takes in the iconic Great Ocean Road from Torquay to Timboon and central-western Victorian towns like Colac. Held in largely Conservative hands for 133 years, Hutch is seeking to be Polwarth’s first woman and first Labor member.

Emma Vulin for Pakenham

Emma Vulin

Emma Vulin is Labor’s candidate for the new electorate of Pakenham in the upcoming state election in November this year.

A mother of two young teens, she is passionate about her community and an active volunteer. In particular, she is a CFA volunteer firefighter and lieutenant, and has also organised her local Clean Up Australia Day, been on the parent committee at her children's school and raised money with her family to build a kinder in Bhola Island, Bangladesh.

In the past she has worked in retail, administration and as a vet nurse, and more recently for federal and state Members of Parliament. This, combined with her volunteer experience, has given her a keen understanding of how government can help people and how to effectively advocate for the community.

The growing Pakenham area needs a government that continues to invest in education, transport and health services. Having recovered from a significant stroke in 2016, Emma knows personally the importance of a well-resourced public health system and the struggles of rehabilitation.

Emma wants to represent her community in the Victorian Parliament and ensure the growing and diverse community of Pakenham continues to get the infrastructure and services it deserves.
